Lucknow: In a major advancement for healthcare in Uttar Pradesh, Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences is set to introduce robotic surgery for complex head and neck procedures. The institute will soon install two ‘Da Vinci’ robotic systems, significantly enhancing precision and safety in delicate operations.
The announcement was made by SGPGI Director Prof. R.K. Dhiman during a national-level cadaver workshop held at the Head and Neck Surgery Department.
Precision and Safety with Robotic Surgery
Robotic-assisted surgery enables doctors to perform highly intricate procedures with greater accuracy, minimal invasiveness, and improved control. Experts say this technology will be especially beneficial for head and neck surgeries, which require extreme precision due to the complexity of the area.
Patients are expected to benefit from reduced complications, faster recovery, and improved surgical outcomes.
Strong Department Performance
The Head and Neck Surgery Department at SGPGI has demonstrated remarkable performance over the past year. In just 11 months, the department treated over 9,000 patients and conducted more than 300 surgeries, highlighting its growing expertise and workload.
National-Level Training Workshop
The cadaver workshop was organised in collaboration with King George’s Medical University and saw participation from around 70 doctors from across the country.

The programme featured live demonstrations, expert lectures, and hands-on training sessions. Participants received practical exposure using “frozen cadavers” (preserved human bodies), allowing them to learn advanced surgical techniques in a controlled environment.
Emphasis on Team-Based Cancer Care
Dean Dr. Shaleen Kumar highlighted the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in cancer treatment, where specialists from multiple fields collaborate to deliver comprehensive care.
Head of the department Dr. Amit Khesari noted that the workshop focused on skill development and the latest surgical innovations.
A Boost for Advanced Healthcare
The introduction of robotic surgery at SGPGI marks a significant step forward in modernising medical infrastructure in Lucknow. It will not only improve patient care but also provide doctors with exposure to cutting-edge techniques.
With this development, SGPGI strengthens its position as a leading centre for advanced medical treatment and training in India.
